The School of Physics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology is among the fastest-developing Physics Faculty in the world. Started in 1983 as a small department, the Faculty contains now 120 tenured and tenure-track members, with 50 professors and 50 associated professors; many of them have honorable records: 3 are members of the National Academy of Science (2 adjunct), 3 are Yangtze-Professors, 5 won the NSF Distinguished Young Scholarship, 6 were selected into the National 1000-Young-Talents Program…… The Faculty has more than 10 high-level research groups, including the “NSF Renovation Group for Gravitational Theory and Experiment” and the “MOE Renovation Group for Ultrafast Optics”. The MOE ranking of HUST physics rose from 19th in 2007 to be 12th in 2012. And in the past 3 years, the Faculty continued be in a rapidly uprising stage: obtaining about 30 new NSF grants each year, with over 100 research projects ongoing via a total funding over 100 million RMB, publishing over 500 SCI papers with more and more in prestigious journals.
The international impact of physics at HUST is quickly increasing. HUST is the unique university in the world which has three affiliated National Laboratories related to Physics: The Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics, National Pulsed High Magnetic Field Center, and the National Precision Gravitational Measurement Facility under construction led by the School of Physics. They strongly support the research of AMO, condensed matter physics, precision measurement, fundamental theoretical physics and test of fundamental physical laws, and geophysics, etc.
To build a top physics faculty, we invite outstanding physicists to join: Fields of Interest: Precision Measurement, AMO, Condensed Matter Physics, Fundamental Theoretical Physics, Geophysics. The field is open for top physicist who can establish a new and world-class research group at HUST.
Positions: 1) Professor and Associate Professor in the above fields; 2) Director of the Institute of Physics in High Magnetic Field; 3) Directors of several research groups at National Precision Gravitational Measurement Facility (see http://ggg.hust.edu.cn)
Qualification: PhD in physics or related fields, research accomplishments with international recognition, a clear research plan with potential to lead a research field, and enthusiasm in education.
To apply: please submit a cover letter (indicating the intended position and expected starting date, etc.), a detailed CV with description of research accomplishments, a research statement with estimated prospect; and request three reference letters sent directly to physics@hust.edu.cn. Application will be accepted all over the year until positions filled.
Benefits and Support: excellent research and teaching setups, start-up grant 500K-1M RMB; salary 200-350K RMB, relocation fee 150-250K RMB, and on-campus school for kids. For distinguished physicists the benefits and support are negotiable, including vacant positions to build a group.
To help the applicants learn better our University and Faculty, we offer visiting opportunities each year to attend our “East Lake Forums on Physics Frontier and Physics Development”
The two Forums are also part of our striving for essential physics research with true contribution to science and technology, inspired by the recent national advocation of renovation-driving strategy. The “Physics Frontier Forum” is held each December to communicate the recent research progress; the “Physics Development Forum” is held each July to evaluate the current research and to plan the upcoming research.
Both Forums will be first held at each research division of the Faculty, joined by some invited excellent researchers in the related field, and organize a number of in-depth talks and discussion in a whole month. The “Frontier Forum” will be in the form of seminars to communicate and discuss the annual research progress, with thoughtful summary of the essential scientific merit of the research result, or the key problems solved in research progress. At the end of December, each research division recommends minimally two excellent talks to join the Annual Academic Meeting of the whole Faculty, with some invited speakers from outside. The “Development Forum” is to diagnose the value of the present research and propose the proper scientific problems and research plan, by purified consideration of true scientific merits or interests, without any beneficial motivation. At the end of July, each research division makes its summary and reports at the Faculty Meeting for intensive discussion, together with some invited leading scientists worldwide.
The initial activities of “Frontier Forum” and “Development Forum” at the research divisions will be assigned different schedules, and welcome crossed participation. The present research divisions and contact persons of the Faculty are:
Center for Gravitational Measurement, Center for Quantum Optics, Laboratory of Ultrafast Optics, Institute of Condensed Matter Physics,
Institute of Physics in High Magnetic Field, Institute of Material Physics,
Institute of Particle and Astrophysics, Institute of Biophysics,
Institute of Geophysics,

For invited outstanding participants of the Forums, we will offer travel reimbursement up to 10,000RMB plus accommodation and stipend during the stay, and access to office, network, and library.
To apply for participating the “Physics Frontier Forum” and/or “Physics Development Forum”, please send a CV and visiting schedule (minimally 5 days) to physics@hust.edu.cn, and copy to the contact person of a related research division as above. Please also supply a talk title and abstract when applying for the “Physics Frontier Forum”, and supply an analysis of the present research and/or thinking of the future research when applying for the “Physics Development Forum”.
Welcome to HUST! And welcome to forward the message to interested people.
